Global food systems are undergoing rapid transformation as rising rates of chronic disease, population ageing, climate change, and technological innovation reshape how food is produced, regulated, and consumed. Increasingly, nutrition is being viewed not only as a means of preventing disease but also as a tool for promoting lifelong health while supporting more sustainable and resilient food systems. Against this backdrop, the Kerry Health and Nutrition Institute's eighth annual Megatrends report identifies five major forces expected to shape the future of food in 2026, offering insights that are relevant not only to the global food industry but also to countries navigating changing nutrition landscapes, including Cameroon.
#TREND 1: Food for Health and Longevity

The first trend centres on nutrition equity, making functional, affordable, and nutritious foods accessible to all consumers rather than only to high-income populations. As cost-of-living pressures persist and the global population ages, demand is shifting toward foods that support long-term vitality, immunity, cognitive function, gut and metabolic health, and sex-specific nutritional needs. The report notes that by 2030, one in six people worldwide will be over the age of 60, accelerating interest in healthy ageing. At the same time, advances in bioactive ingredients, next-generation biotics, GLP-1–related nutrition, and digital technologies are driving more personalised approaches to nutrition.
#TREND 2: Global Regulatory Movement

The second trend highlights an expanding global regulatory movement aimed at improving public health. Front-of-pack warning labels, sugar and sodium reduction targets, and restrictions on marketing foods high in fat, salt, and sugar are becoming increasingly common, with policies pioneered in Latin America now spreading across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
#TREND 3 AND 4: AI-driven Precision Nutrition and the Processing Paradox

The third and fourth trends—AI-driven precision nutrition and the processing paradox—reflect the growing role of technology in nutrition. Artificial intelligence is enabling more personalised dietary recommendations, while advances in food processing are prompting a shift in how processed foods are evaluated. Rather than viewing processing as inherently harmful, the report emphasises that modern processing techniques can either preserve or diminish nutritional quality, depending on how they are designed, applied, and communicated to consumers.
#TREND 5: Human Nutrition with Environmental Sustainability

The fifth trend links human nutrition with environmental sustainability, emphasising that healthier diets depend on healthier ecosystems. Regenerative agriculture, resilient supply chains, and sustainable food production are presented as essential strategies for nourishing a global population expected to approach 10 billion by 2050.
Developed through contributions from a global network of food scientists, nutritionists, and policy experts, the report is primarily intended for the food industry. However, its findings have broader significance for countries such as Cameroon, where rapid urbanisation and changing dietary patterns are driving a nutrition transition characterised by the coexistence of undernutrition and rising obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases. Despite these opportunities, Cameroon faces important barriers to adopting many of these innovations, including limited regulatory frameworks for nutrition policies—such as food-based dietary guidelines, front-of-pack nutrition labelling, and sodium reduction strategies—as well as unequal access to digital technologies and food system infrastructure, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas.
Nevertheless, several of the report's recommendations align closely with national priorities. Expanding access to affordable, nutrient-dense foods through the fortification of widely consumed staples such as maize, cassava, and sorghum offers a practical pathway toward improving nutrition equity. Likewise, the growing emphasis on balancing food processing for safety, shelf life, and nutrient preservation complements initiatives such as the Healthy Food Market project, which aims to improve food safety and hygiene in local markets. By investing in affordable food fortification programmes, strengthening food safety systems, and aligning national nutrition policies with emerging global priorities, Cameroon has an opportunity to improve population health while positioning itself for stronger partnerships with international donors and technical organisations working to build healthier, more resilient food systems.
